17/03/2008 - WHAT'S SO IMPORTANT ABOUT EASTER?

Two thousand years ago, in the Middle East, an event occurred that permanently changed the world.  Because of that event, history was split.  Every time you write a date, you're using the resurrection of Jesus Christ as the focal point.

What's so important about Easter?  Its important because it proved that Jesus was who he claimed to be.  He was God in the flesh, and he came to earth to save us.

Three events occurred in a dramatic succession on that Easter weekend; the trial of Jesus, then the death of Jesus, and finally the resurrection of Jesus.  Lets look at each of these events and their implications.

The Trial

Jesus actually went through six trials.  In that one night, he was brought before Annas, Caiphas (the high priest) the Sanhedrin (the religious Supreme Court), Pilate (the governer of Jerusalem), Herod (the governer of Galilee}, and then back to Pilate.  At the end of these six trials what did they find to accuse him of?  Nothing.  He had done nothing wrong .  They brought in people to make up phony charges, but those did not stick.  Finally they convicted him on one count: claiming to be the Son of God.  That's the sole reason Jesus went to the cross.  They didn't like that claim.

Everyone who has ever been presented with Jesus has already made some kind of decision about who he is.  You either believe he's a liar, or you believe he's a lunatic, or you believe he's the Lord.  It can't just be: " I believe he was a good teacher".  He couldn't be just a good teacher, because a good teacher would not say "I'm God, and I'm the only way to heaven".  A good person would not say that unless it was the truth.

Jesus claimed to be the Saviour of the world.  In John 12:47, he is recorded as saying: "I didn't come to judge the world . I came to save it."  He allowed himself to be put on trial so there would  be  no doubt who he was.  He could have stopped the trial at any moment.  He knew he would be proven guilty and put on the cross--but he allowed it to happen.  It was all part of the plan.

The Death

After a night of beatings and mocking, after being crowned with painful thorns, Jesus was crucified.  Crucifixation is probably the most brutal and torturous death penalty ever devised by men.  His hands were stretched out wide against the cross and nailed throughh the two bones in each wrist.  As the nails went through his flesh, they would strike the nerve that travels up the arm and cause excruciating pain.

If you hung this way for any perioid of time, the muscles around your chest cavity began to be paralyzed.

You'd be able to breathe in but you could't breathe out.  Death on a cross would have been a simple matter of suffocation--except the Romans didn't want to make it that easy.  They'd take a persons knees and bend them a little bit and nail the feet to the cross.  So a man would hang there in absolute agony until the pain in his chest was about to explode --and then he would lift himself up on his nailed feet to grab a breath.  When the pain in his feet grew unbearable, he'd let himself back down again--until the pain in his lungs became unbearable.  It was an increadable torturous event.  Eventually. the soldiers would break the legs of the criminal to hasten death by suffocation.

In the case of Jesus, they didn't have to break his legs, because he had already died.  But just to make sure, they stuck a spear in his side.  Water and blood came out of the chest cavity, which doctors say only happens if the heart rips.  You can call it what you want, but Jesus died of a broken heart.

Why did Jesus have to die?  Because he alone was able to pay for your sins.  You deserved punishment, but Jesus paid the penalty for you.

The Resurrection

After Jesus died they took his body down and put him in a tomb, and a giant millstone was set in front of the cave.  The religious leaders--worried that Jesus' body might be stolen--asked for Roman guards to be posted in front of the tomb.  They didn't want him coming out!  But of course, he did.

You know the story .  But it is important to remember that Easter is not some memorial to a nice good religious teacher who lived 2000 years ago.  It's a celebration of the fact he is alive today. I'm living proof --and so are the approximately 1 billion Christians who will celebrate Easter.

"--by being raised from the dead he was proved to be the mighty Son of God, with the holy nature of God himself."  (Romans 1:4)

Easter is the good news about God's Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who came as a human baby, born into King David's royal family line.  Four historical records say he showed himself to 500 people at one gathering.  Can you imagine witnessing his death and then seeing him walking around Jerusalem three days later?  What an amazing thing!  When Jesus was hanging on the cross, the skepticsand critics mocked him and said, " If you are the Son of God, why don't you come down from the cross?  Why don't you just come down and show that you are really are God?"  Jesus had something more spectacular planned .  He said "I'm going to let you bury me for three days, then I'll come back to life to prove that Iam what Iam"

What does that mean to us today?  In one sense, Jesus Christ is still on trial.  He's on trial in the heart and mind of every person who has not yet acknowledged him as the Son of God, the Savour of the world.

What's your verdict?  You see, Easter really boils down to only two issues.  One, is Jesus who he says he is?  Is he God?  Or is he a lunatic and a liar?  And two, if he is , when are you going to start following  what he says to do with your life?

Today, you sit in judgement of Jesus Christ.  Just as Pilate asked, "What shall I do then with Jesus who is called the Christ"? you also must decide whether he was who he said or not.

Are you willing to gamble your life he was wrong?

25/05/2007 - Player of the Year 2007

Monday evening the 21st May saw a number of the team present at the Church to join with the Art Club who were holding an Exhibition of there work.

An attendance of over 70 were present  and as Alex outlined our season the team received there biggest cheer of the year all be it I think it was out of sympathy for our plight.

As a result this year the vote for the Player of the Year was very close  and in fact there were 7 nominations with only one vote seperating the top two.

Then proceeded by drum roll, from our long suffering supporter Peter, it was announced that Kris was the Player of the Year voted by his fellow players. Kris has played well all season and fully deserved the award.

The shield was presented by church member Kitty, who donated the shield in memory of her late husband Andy Fleming, to a delighted Kris.

The occasion also marked the farewell to Luca and his family who were now returning to Rome after 8 years sterling service for the team. Luca was presented with a friendship quaich  and he said that we were to call on him when short and he would fly over from Rome to play.

01/11/2004 - 3 REASONS WHY YOU NEED JESUS

1 BECAUSE YOU HAVE A PAST.

You can't go back but He can.  The Bible says "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever" (Hebrews 13:8).  He can walk into those places of sin and failure, wipe the slate clean and give you a new beginning.

2 BECAUSE YOU NEED A FRIEND

Jesus knows the worst about you, yet believes the best. Why?  Because He sees  you not as you are, but as you will be when He gets through with you. What a friend!

3 BECAUSE HE HOLDS THE FUTURE

Who else are you going to trust?  In His hands you are safe and secure-today, tomorrow, and for eternity. His word says "For I know the plans I have for you...plans for good and not evil, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray I will listen" (Jeremiah 29:11-13)

If you would like to begin a personal relationship with Jesus today, please pray this prayer.

Lord Jesus, I invite you into my life. I believe you died for me and that your blood pays for my sins and provides me with the gift of eternal life.  By faith I recieve that gift and I acknowledge you as my Lord and Saviour.  Amen.

24/08/2004 - WHY JESUS ? (part 14 )

WHAT NOW ?

1. Tell someone

It is important to tell someone in order to underline the decision you have made.  Often it is only when you tell someone else that it becomes a reality to you.  It is probably best to start by telling someone who you think will be pleased to hear the news.

2. Read the Bible

Once we have recieved Jesus and put our trust in him we become children of God (John 1:12).  He is our heavenly Father.  Like any father he wants us to have a close relationship with him.  We develop this relationship as we listen to him (primarily through the Bible) and as we speak to him in prayer.  The Bible is the word of God and you might find it helpful to begin by reading a few verses of John's gospel every day.  Ask God to speak to you as you read.

3. Start to speak to God each day (ie pray)

I find the following agreat help:

A--Adoration -   Praising God for who he is and what he has done

C--Confession-  Asking God's forgiveness for anything that we have done   wrong.

T--Thanksgiving-  Thanking God for health, family, friends and so on.

S--Supplication-    Praying for ourselves, for our friends and for others.

4.  Join a lively church

It is important to be part of a group of Chrtistians who get  together to worship God to hear what God is saying to them, to encourage one another and to make friends. Church should be an exciting place.

THIS IS THE END OF THIS SERIES IF YOU WOULD LIKE A COPY OF THE WHY JESUS?  BOOK PLEASE CONTACT ME.

IF YOU PRAYED THE PRAYER AND WOULD LIKE TO TELL SOMEONE IT WOULD BE GREAT TO HEAR FROM YOU.

09/08/2004 - WHY JESUS ? (part13)

WHY NOT ?  (cont.)

e)  'I could never keep it up'

We are right to think that we never could keep it up.  We cannot by ourselves, but the Spitit of God, who comes to live within us. give us the power and the strength to keep going as Christians.

f)  'I'll do it later'

This is perhaps the most common excuse.  Sometimes people say, 'I know it is true but I'am not ready.'  They put it off.  The longer we put it off the harder it becomes and the more we miss out.  We never know whether we will get another oppurtunity.  Speaking for myself, my only regret is that I did not accept the gift earlier.

WHAT DO WE HAVE TO DO?

The New Testament makes it clear we have to do something to accept the gift that God offers. This is an act of faith.  John writes that 'God so loved the world that he gve his one and only Son, that whosover believe in him shall not perish but have eternal life' (John 3:16).  Believing involves an act of faith, based on all we know about Jesus. It is not blind faith .  It is putting our trust in a person. In some ways it is like the step faith taken by a bride or a bridegroom when they say, 'Iwill' on their wedding day.

The way people take this step of faith varies enormously but I want to describe one way in which you can take this step of faith right now.  It can be summarised by three very simple words.

a)  'Sorry'

You have to ask God to forgive you for all the things you have done wrong and turn from everything which you know is wrong in your life. This is what the Bible means by 'repentance'

b)  'Thank you'

We believe that Jesus died for us on the cross.  You need to thank him for dying for you and for the offer of his free gift of forgiveness, freedom and his Spirit.

c)  'Please'

God never forces his way into our lives.  You need to accept his gift  and invite him to come and live within you by his Spirit.

If you would like to have a relationship with God and you are ready to say these three things, then here is a very simple prayer which you can pray and which will be the start of that relationship:

LORD JESUS CHRIST

I'AM SORRY FOR THE THINGS I HAVE DONE WRONG IN MY LIFE  (TAKE A FEW MOMENTS TO ASK HIS FORGIVENESS FOR ANYTHING PARTICULAR THAT IS ON YOUR CONSCIENCE).  PLEASE FORGIVE ME.  I NOW TURN FROM EVERYTHING WHICH I KNOW IS WRONG.

THANK YOU THAT YOU DIED FOR ON THE CROSS FOR ME SO THAT I COULD BE FORGIVEN AND SET FREE.

THANK YOU THAT YOU OFFER ME FORGIVENESS AND THE GIFT OF YOUR SPIRIT.  I NOW RECIEVE THAT GIFT.

PLEASE COME INTO MY LIFE BY YOUR HOLY SPIRITTO BE WITH ME FOR EVER.

THANK YOU, LORD JESUS. AMEN
